The Earth...Update

I've been working on this virtually non-stop since last week while I was at Kathy's. However it's now been put away temporarily so I can do some model stitching for Jayne. I'm also waiting for something to do from Jo at Polstitches.

Mind you, I did have a new start today too. I've been helping Jayne out at the shop for the past few days and today I took some stitching with me to be getting on with. I started Loopylou's Mistletoe, which I had been gonna start while I was at Kathy's, till I realised I didn't have the perle threads to do the hardanger bit at the top. I'm going to be working on that again tomorrow so I will take a photo after that and post an update on here.
Not been up to much else. Kate is at Matty's this weekend and will be back on Sunday as usual. Ian is coming home tomorrow for the Easter break. After Easter he'll only have a few more weeks at college before he's finished for good. He's not going back in September, he's going to try and get a job instead, when he gets back from his holiday in Corfu with his dad.
I got a new toy today. A laser printer. It's a Brother HL-2030 and is really really fast. It's brilliant, but it's only a mono printer so I've still got my Epson one too. The laser printer will come in really handy for printing my charts out.

Back from Kathy's

I had to come back early from Kathy's yesterday due to family health problems, and I was really sad to say goodbye to her and the boys. Hopefully I'll be able to go and visit again soon though.

While I was away I had one stitchy finish. The final part of Sweet Dreams came out from Polstitches Designs, which was basically wrapping the bars and sewing some beads on. I haven't decided what to do with it yet, maybe a small cushion, or maybe a needlecase. Either way, I still have the chart to make more, which I will be doing some time in the near future.
I also did some stitching on some of my other projects. I did a bit more on Miss Mary Mack and she is almost finished. Mary is anyway, still have all the writing and the border to do once she's finished. Then I did some work on L&L Celtic Autumn. And for the rest of the week I stitched on Dimensions' The Earth Is Our Home... and got quite a lot of that done. I haven't taken any photos of these yet, but I will do, hopefully later on today. Kathy decided while I was there that she didn't like the Celtic Winter lady that she was in the process of stitching as it didn't fit in with the colour scheme she has chosen, so she gave it to me. I will probably wait till I'm finished Autumn before I go on to Winter though. But then again...
I'm going to be model stitching soon and I can't wait. Jayne was after model stitchers so I'm going to be doing the Passione Ricamo fairy that I started for her when Kathy came up here to visit last month. Kathy herself is doing a Jan Houtman design called Bud of Life for Jayne. I'm also going to be stitching for Jo at Polstitches, but these will be her own designs so I'm not allowed to talk about those till they're finished. I can't wait to start.
Now I'm waiting for the next part of Jayne's Hardanger SAL to come out so that I can get some more of that done. All the ones I've seen so far look brilliant and I can't wait for it to be finished in the next couple of weeks.

Not sure

Mollie can't decide if she likes balloons or not. When we were blowing them up on Friday for my brother's brithday she was barking at us and them and of course we were making her worse by teasing her with them. LOL. Since then however, she's been getting braver and now plays with them to a certain extent. She's worn herself out now though and is lying on the floor at Craig's feet. Dippity dog.
I've started doing some of my packing for going down to Kathy's. I've done new labels for all my project folders and they're in the crate ready to go in the car. But they can't go in the car till Craig has cleared all his crap out of it. When his Mondeo got taken off the road he emptied the boot...into my boot. There's bricks and all sorts in there now. Git!
Still haven't packed any clothes, but most of them are still in the wash so have to wait till they're done. Don't suppose anyone will iron them for me before they're packed, although Kathy has volunteered to do any if I need it while I am down there. She's a strange one that Kathy, she actually DOES ironing. Weird!
The new part of Jayne's SAL has been sent out to the participants and I've printed it off ready to do. I may do it tonight before I go, or leave it till I get to Kathy's. I think there are eyelets to do this week and also cutting.

Happy Mothers Day

Hope you're all having a great day. I popped round to Mam's first thing to take her her card. She's had her pressie for a month or so now, one of the pictures I had framed. When I came back I opened my cards from Dene and Kate. The one from Ian is still in the shop he says. LOL. Then Dene and Ian gave me their presents. I dropped HEAVY hints for certain CDs this year so I got Dr Hook - Completely Hooked from Dene. I already have this CD, but it's been played to death and jumps about all over the place so it needed replacing. From Ian I got Ultimate Boy Bands CD, which I'm busy listening to as I type this. I'm hoping to get the new Take That CD when Kate comes home from Matty's in a couple of hours time. Needless to say they'll all be accompanying me down to North Somerset when I go down to Kathy's tomorrow.

Pins & Needles Show

Yesterday I went to the Pins & Needles Craft Show at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle. I wasn't going to go, but someone who had a ticket couldn't go at the last minute and she gave me her ticket, along with a ticket to a scrapbooking workshop. I drove down to the arena and was there in time to nab a disabled parking spot - few and far between! It opened at 10am so I got in and had a wander around while it was fairly quiet. I had a 10 minute sit down out in the foyer and a drink of water, then went back in and it was absolutely HEAVING! Couldn't get moved for people, and bloody push chairs! Why can't people leave their babies at home instead of putting them through that? It can't be pleasant for them with hoards of marauding crafters all around them, bashing them with bags and stampeding to get the best bargains. Poor little buggers.
Anyway...I found the Jayne's Attic stall. It was much bigger than she's had in recent years and it didn't seem to be as cluttered as it normally is (sorry Jayne but it did look cluttered in such a small space). She had lots of new goodies, two new designers on stand, and the usual suspects helping her man the stand - Sheila, Julia and Marion. They were the three I saw, dunno if there was anyone else over the three days. I was tempted by so much stuff there, but I decided to hold out a bit longer as funds were limited.
I went back out to the foyer to grab a seat and have another bottle of water. By this time it was almost noon and time for the workshop. I made my way to the workshop area and settled in for a really enjoyable hour and a quarter. Debbi Moore was the demonstrator. Apparently she's been on a few of the craft channels on TV, and in about six weeks time is going to be on QVC. I never watch the shopping channels, I don't think we have them on Freeview, so I'd never seen her before. She was really nice though and talked us through the basics of scrapbooking, with some very useful handouts. I'm not a complete novice at doing this, as I did books for Kate's 18th birthday, and also for her best friend Laura's 18th birthday. However, Debbi did have some excellent advice and tips, and after a quick talk, she let us rummage through her papers and we selected three each to tone in with each other. Then we had to design our own page and pretend we had photos to put on it. I did a wintery theme for mine and even if I do say so myself it looks pretty good. Mind you, I have no idea what the hell I'm gonna do with it. LOL.
After that, I wandered around the hall again and spent some money. The Knitting & Crochet Guild stand had some baby patterns for 50p each, so I bought some. Another stand had some baby wool so I bought 4 balls of white. I also bought a 'Quilters Quarter' and some charms from the LK stand. I then went back to Jayne's and treated myself to a pair of blue platinum (I think) scissors. Like I don't have enough pairs of scissors! I think I'm starting to get a serious fetish. I also bought three packs of Mill Hill beads for my collection.
I then went over to the Make & Take stand, run by one of Jayne's new designers, Debbie Johnson, who does the Letters tied with blue designs, sort of native American freestyle stitching. I did a little flower design which I was really rather pleased with.
So all in all a pretty good day, but I was glad to get home and have a comfy chair...I was absolutely knackered.

Have a giggle

Pregnancy, Estrogen and Women Pregnancy Q & A & more!

  • Q: Should I have a baby after 35?

  • Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
  • A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.

  • Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby's sex?
  • A: Childbirth.

  • Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she's borderline irrational.

  • A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

  • Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labour?

  • A: Yes, pregnancy.

  • Q: Do I have to have a baby shower?
  • A: Not if you change the baby's diaper very quickly.

Not Much Happening

Which is why I haven't posted since the weekend. Week 4 of Polstitches hardanger SAL came out the other day and I did the cutting in about 15 mins. You can just about make out on this photo which bits have been cut. I expect next week we'll be wrapping bars, but I'll be down at Kathy's so will have to ask her to print off the destructions for me. LOL.
Jayne hasn't sent us week 3 instructions for her SAL yet, but as this week is the Pins & Needles show at Metro Radio Arena I'm not really expecting them to be out till Sunday. I wasn't going to go to the show, as I'm saving my pennies for Kathy's, but someone can't go who already has a ticket, so she's sending me it, plus the ticket for a scrapbooking workshop, which should be quite good.
Today is my little brother's 40th birthday. We're having a surprise party for him at tea time, a proper kids' party, with pass the parcel, jelly and ice cream, pin the tail on the donkey etc. It should be a right laugh. Mam is coming over early this afternoon to help with the food.
I started knitting again yesterday. It's years since I did any, but I know at least three people who are expecting so I thought I'd get the old knitting needles out. And when I say old I mean that literally. The patterns I bought last weekend have all the needle sizes in metric, and virtually all the needles are in old money. Luckily I managed to find the size I needed and made a start on a pair of mittens last night. I've got both mittens on the needles at the same time so at least they'll be the same size. LOL.

Promised Photos

As promised here are some photos of what I've been up to recently. First up is the mouse I did on Lynn's RR for Aion Friends. It was ever such a quick stitch. I've added a second photo I took of the one I stitched and the one next to it so you can see them both together. I think we're about halfway through this round robin now and it's going really smoothly, with no drop-outs, which makes a nice change.

The next photo is of Polstitches' SAL, after week 3. We were supposed to do yellow french knots in the middles of the flowers, but I'm crap at those so I used some little yellow beads that I got in Prague last year. You can't really make them out in the photo but they are there, honest.
And the final photo is of Jayne's hardanger SAL on the Stitch and Stash board, after week 2. There was a hell of a lot of counting on that one, and I admit I had to frog a couple of times when I stuffed up, but it's coming along nicely and I can't wait for the next lot of instructions.
Tomorrow I think I'm probably going to be working on In The Garden Of My Heart by Elizabeth's Designs (at least I think that's what it's called) as I didn't do anything to it last Sunday.
I received Colette's RR in the post this morning (Aion Friends RR) and her theme is nature, so I suppose I'll have to hunt something out appropriate for that too. Something that no one else has used. Hmmm...thinking cap will definitely be on methinks.

Which Karen?

In case anyone is confused, this is the Karen I tagged.

I've had a busy afternoon today. First off I dragged Craig down to Dainty Supplies in Washington. I made him drive cos I knew the roads would be busy - and I was right, they were! In DS I bought some Mill Hill beads for my collection, some lace, and some party favours for my little brother's 4oth birthday party on Friday. We're having a proper kids party, Kevin is such a big kid it's unbelievable. So we're having jelly and ice cream, pass the parcel, the works.
After that it was off to Hobbycraft - eventually. The traffic and car parks everywhere we went were horrendous. Should have expected it really with it being Saturday afternoon. And of course, Craig got lost and we went on a magical mystery tour. In HC I bought some baby wool and 4 knitting patterns. Everyone seems to have either just given birth or is pregnant, so I thought I would do some knitting, if I can remember how to do it.
After that we trecked round Curry's looking for a label printer...they had none. PC World...had none. So...off to Staples as I knew they had them. I am now the proud owner of a Dymo Label Writer 400. And it works! How impressive is that!
I have some photos to post later, got one thing to finish first, then some scanning and download the camera.

TAGGED!

I have been tagged by Claire. It's called Five Questions and Five Things. This is how it all works - for the first part, 5 Questions - anyone reading my blog can ask me five questions in the comments. I'll answer them in the blog as soon as time allows. For the second, Five Things About Me that I haven't revealed in my blog. Here are the rules: 1. Get tagged 2. List five things that have not been revealed on your blog 3. Tag five others.
Five things about me:
  1. I collect thimbles, china ones that are on racks going up the stairs.
  2. When I was younger I was fairly nifty on the recorder, and even passed an exam.
  3. I broke my collar bone doing Judo when I was about 12.
  4. I always wanted to work as a secretary when I was growing up, and I've never achieved that, although I have worked in offices.
  5. My family tree, on my Dad's side, can be traced back to Sir Walter Scott.

I now tag erm...Kathy, Karen, Julie, Alli and Heather. Sorry ladies.

More pin keeps

I haven't really been in the mood for stitching on my big projects as I've been full of cold with all that that entails. So I've been doing some small designs instead and have finished three Calico Cat charts, which today I made into pin keeps, as pictured here. The top one is called Buttons & Lace, and it's stitched on Polstitches 2000 fabric with a Kate's Kloths stranded cotton. I can't remember any of the colours I used on these three pin keeps, sorry, and they're all stitched on the same material.

The second pin keep is a design called Amazing Bugs, again from The Calico Cat. And the third Calico Cat design is called Hearts & Flowers.

I have a RR to do this weekend, ready for posting off by the end of next week. I will post a photo of it when it's finished.
Kathy and I have decided to start up a designing business together, which could be interesting as we live so far apart, but we'e going to give it a go anyway and see how it goes. We already have a few designs worked out, just small things at the minute, and there are still some things to figure out, such as a web site and whose address we're going to use. Watch this space.

Finishing HD

As my regular blog readers will know I've had a hell of a lot of finishes lately, and I've been trying to decide what to do with them all. I can't afford to frame everything, and I probably don't have enough wall space to do that anyway, so I've been looking at different ways to finish my projects off.
You may remember seeing this little Calico Cat before, I think I finished it in January - or maybe February- and I was going to make it into a needle case, as I do with most of my small finishes. However, this morning, I took it into my head to try a pin keep instead. Here you see the result of my labours. Not bad for my first attempt, even if I do say so myself. Even the tassel is made by me, and I'd never made those before either. I'll definitely be making some more pin keeps though.

BLEUCH!

I've felt like complete crap today. I'm knackered for one thing, even though I had an hour's kip this afternoon. But then I had to get up for a pee and couldn't be bothered to climb the stairs again to go back to bed. I did manage to make a C'mas ornie though. I can't show you a photo though as Kathy, the person who will be the recipient, will see it. And we can't have that now can we! Sorry Sis!
I'm also full of cold, which isn't really helping matters. Bad head, snotty nose, sore throat, the works. I went to sleep last night with my nose in a jar of Vicks. I love that stuff. I took the lid off and the stupid dog had to have a sniff too. Don't think she was too impressed. LOL.
For the rest of the day I've been debating what to do next. Whether to start something new or on my two spare days carry on with something I already have on the go and get it finished a bit quicker. The new Chatelaine started yesterday, St Petersburg White Nights (from now on St P), but as I don't have all the materials to do it I haven't done any yet. I do have the fabric, and the beads should be on the way as I've paid for them. I have a few of the threads, but I'm a bit skint at the mo so it could be a while before I get round to it.
I sent Craig to Wards today to get me some foam board, as I'm running out of ORT bags. I only have three left and one of those is spoken for. Must get some more made up soon.

And another hardanger SAL

This one is being done through the Stitch and Stash message board (Jayne's Attic). I did all the kloster blocks last night and finished off the satin stitches this morning, with a pounding head, sore throat, the sneezes and a runny nose. This particular one is being stitched on off white 28 count evenweave with Finca perle #9770 and Carrie's Creation Pacific Blue stranded cotton.

The one in the post below is on Polstitches Cuddles 28 count evenweave, using English Rose perle, Lavender & Lilacs perle, also stranded cottons - Hint Of Mint, Glints Of Gold, Moonbeam and Ice Pink.

Hardanger SAL

Jo from Polstitches is running a hardanger SAL on her message board, which I'm taking part in, along with a few other people. I have just finished week 2 of the instructions and I think it's looking really nice. But maybe I'm a bit biased.
I recently took part in a RAOK on the Tranquil Stitches board, and my exchange partner was Heather (Heather's Stitching Haven in my blog list). Apparently I should have sent her a card and something little to fit inside it. However, I didn't actually read it properly and sent her one of my handmade needlecases and an ORT bag. She loves them both, which I am really pleased about. I'm sending Craig to Wards later on to get me some more foam board so I can make some more ORT bags as Mollie chewed about five of my finished ones a couple of weeks ago.
